CREATING WEALDEN CHARCOAL

Wealden Charcoal is run by Bob, Richard, Tommy and Steve all members of the Sussex and Surrey Coppice Group, as a way to enhance their role in promoting biodiversity, by maintaining and improving local woodlands. UK woodlands are no longer subjected to the large herbivores like aurochs (ancestral cattle) pushing down and eating trees, producing clearings – meaning woodlands have become less productive and diverse.

Coppicing has always been used to improve the value and usefulness of woodland, providing fencing materials and other products, and in the case of the Weald, some high-quality charcoal from very hard woods such as Hornbeam. A woodland that is on a continuous Coppice rotation creates an abundance of biodiversity each cut attracting more diversity as the cycles evolve, as mentioned above replicating ancient cycles of the great herds that wandered this land. We run long term plans for our woods. UK woodlands are no longer subjected to the large herbivores like aurochs (ancestral cattle) pushing down and eating trees, producing clearings – meaning woodlands have become less productive and diverse.
